Notes:
Comfortable mattresses are filled with rice straw, which must first be dried in the infrequent sunny hours of Chengtu. [now Chengdu] Women work with bundles of straw, making sure they dry properly.
Ginling College shared the campus of West China Union University during the period when its home campus was occupied by the Japanese during the Sino-Japanese war.
