The Rev. Charles Hartwell and his second wife, Louisa Plimpton, are seated on the steps of an unidentified building. Mrs. Lyman Peet, their daughter-in-law, is seated on the step beneath them. The Rev. Hartwell is holding Mrs. Peet's child.
The Hartwells were American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions missionaries stationed in Foochow, Fukien.
