Newport, Newport county, Rhode Island, United States 1957–1990
Height: 40 in.
Description: Queen Anne walnut side chair; an outstanding example which excels in form and design as well as condition, retaining the old or original variegated finish; the horseshoe seat, undulating stiles and vase splat are typical of Newport design but are compressed into a compact, tightly-drawn frame with a vertical emphasis; the foliage flanking the shell of the crest rail shows the interrelation of New York and Newport chairmaking design, the serpentine profile view is exceptional in comparison with chairs of this group. ------- Bibliography: Book: American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, 10 vols. (Washington, D.C.: Highland House Publishers, 1957–1990), vol. IX, pg. 2481, pl. P203.
