Sack catalogue description: Chippendale mahogany fire screen with original embroidered diamond-shaped crewelwork panel embroidered and signed by Patty Reed, the panel depicts a vase with delicate floral arrangement with birds and animals and with American eagles and shields in the corners; the base is superbly carved with a bulbous vase column, acanthus-carved knees intersected by dotted bar, and finely modeled claw-and-ball feet; original untouched finish and original urn finial. This fire screen was purchased by us in 1962 from the estate of Mary Reed Cushman, the great-granddaughter of Patty Reed. Patty Reed was born on May 20, 1770, the daughter of Hezekiah Hutchens of Hampstead, Massachusetts; she married Captain Thomas Reed, also of Hampstead, Massachusetts. A letter from the daughter of Mary Reed Cushman attests to the descent and accompanies the fire screen. ----- Bibliography: Book: American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, 10 vols.
