Sack catalogue description: Queen Anne walnut low-back upholstered armchair, compass or horseshoe-shaped upholstered seat, cabriole legs with broad rounded knees to conform to the broad curve of the seat frame; bold serpentine bend to the cabriole legs and pad feet, serpentine arms with broad scooped arm rests and scrolled terminals, the arm supports serpentine with an S-bend under the arm; upholstered back of bowed outline, original finish, cherry framework. Descended in the Tibbits family of Hoosick Falls, New York; ex-collection Israel Sack, Inc., 1939; ex-collection Charles K. Davis. American low upholstered armchairs are quite rare, this New York Queen Anne form being the finest known; a related example, also from the Tibbits family, is in the Winterthur Museum, illustrated in Downs, American Furniture, pl. 17. Another example(s) is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
