Abstract:
Two couples -- one middle age and the other youthful -- dance in a shabby room. The older man in the foreground wears a wig and tattered shirt; his partner wears a plumed headdress. The man seated at the left strikes a tambourine and plays a flute; two dogs dance at his feet, one dressed in a shirt and bonnet. The man at the far right plays a fiddle; a barefoot child holds up her nightshirt as she stands in third position. In the background, a trundle bed leans upright against the wall; a mirror and picture (showing another couple dancing) hang on the wall. The cupboard door in the wall on the right stands open allowing a cat to scramble after the food.
