The book contains several poems written by different authors: Hịch đánh quân nhà Nguyên (written by Trần Quốc Tuấn), Thể Tục Phú (written by Trần Văn Nghĩa), Hồng Nhan Bạc Phận Phú, Gái Nhỡ Thì Phú, Lắm Mối Tối Nằm Không Phú, Mẹ Ơi Con Muốn Lấy Chồng Phú, Nữ Tử Hiếu Sĩ Từ Nông Phú, Răn Cờ Bạc Phú.
Most of the poems are "Phú", a literary genre originated from China. "Phú" often has rhymed verses interspersed with prose, used to describe landscape, things, people and through it expresses the author's philosophy, point of view, life perspective. "Phú" usually includes four sections: the opening, the explaining, the commenting and the concluding. There is one special poem “Hịch đánh quân nhà Nguyên” or “Hịch tướng sĩ” written in the middle of XIII century by General Trần Quốc Tuấn, the Chief Commander of Vietnamese army of Trần dynasty in the war against Mongolia’s 2nd invasion (around 1285). With the responsibility that people entrusted weighing heavily on his shoulders, Tran Quoc Tuan wrote this “calling to fight” in order to provoke the patriotism, the bravery and the determination to defeat the enemy among his soldiers. Burning with patriotic enthusiasm, he strongly showed his hatred toward the enemy, praise for the heroic figures whose sacrifices had been widely recognized in Chinese and Vietnamese histories and expressed his desire to claim the victory. In a tone half sarcastic and ironic, half sincere and passionate, he described the embarrassment and terrible consequences if the country was lost into the hand of invaders. Based on that, he encouraged and fired up the soldiers’ willingness to fight until the last breath. Hưng Đạo Vương Trần Quốc Tuấn (another name is Trần Hưng Đạo, 1232?-1300) was a talented Chief Commander in Trần Dynasty, who led the Vietnamese Army to defeat Mongolian invaders 3 times from 1258 to 1288. His father was Trần Liễu, who due to political reasons was forced by imperial regent Trần Thủ Độ to surrender his wife to his brother Trần Cảnh ( Trần Thái Tông Emperor). Even though his father’s last words to him were to ask him to revenge, he was still a loyal official and fulfilled his duties. He was considered a very tactical and skillful army leader, carried out smart fighting strategies, understood and utilized the solidarity among people, and strongly believed in the support and strength of his soldiers and his people.
Cuốn sách bao gồm nhiều bài thơ được viết bởi các nhà thơ khác nhau. Phần lớn các bài thơ viết dưới dạng " Phú", một thể loại thơ có nguồn gốc từ Trung Quốc được tạo bởi các câu thơ reo vần xen kẽ với văn xuôi dùng để tả cảnh, tả vật, tả người qua đó thể hiện nhân sinh quan của tác giả. Phú thường bao gồm 4 phần: Phần mở đầu, phần diễn giải, phần bình luận và phần kết. Riêng có một bài thơ Hịch tướng sĩ được viết vào giữa thế kỉ XIII bởi Hưng Đạo Vương Trần Quốc Tuấn, người đã thống lĩnh quân đội nhà Trần trong thời gian chuẩn bị kháng chiến chống quân Nguyên lần thứ 2 ( khoảng năm 1285). Với trọng trách mà dân tộc giao phó đè nặng trên đôi vai, Trần Quốc Tuấn viết bài hịch nhằm khơi dậy trong ba quân tướng sĩ tinh thần yêu nước, lòng dũng cảm và ý chí chiến đấu đánh bại quân xâm lược. Với ngọn lửa yêu nước cháy bỏng, ông tỏ rõ thái độ căm ghét đối với quân thù, đề cao những tấm gương xả thân vì nghĩa lớn đã từng đi vào sử sách Việt Nam và Trung Quốc, giãi bày lòng khao khát muốn giành chiến thắng. Bằng một giọng văn vừa mỉa mai, châm biếm, vừa tình cảm, chân thành, ông mô tả những hệ lụy và nỗi nhục mất nước. Từ đó, ông đã khích lệ và thổi bùng lên nhiệt huyết chiến đấu của quân sĩ. Hưng Đạo Vương Trần Quốc Tuấn hay còn gọi là Trần Hưng Đạo ( 1232?-1300) là một vị tướng tài ba, người đã thống lãnh quân đội nhà Trần 3 lần đánh tan quân Nguyên Mông trong giai đoạn từ 1258 đến 1288. Bố của ông là Trần Liễn, vì lý do chính trị đã bị thái sư Trần Thủ Độ ép nhường vợ cho em mình là Trần Cảnh, tức vua Trần Thái Tông. Mặc dù mang trong mình lời chăng chối của cha về việc báo thú nhưng ông không bao giờ trở thành một kẻ khi quân, ngược lại ông luôn trung thành và hoàn thành tốt công việc được giao. Ông được coi là một thiên tài quân sự có tầm chiến lược, một Tiết chế đầy tài năng và đặc biệt có một có một lòng tin sắt đá vào sức mạnh và ý chí của nhân dân.Có thể nói tư tưởng quán xuyến suốt đời của Trần Hưng Đạo, là một tấm lòng tận tụy đối với đất nước, là ý muốn đoàn kết mọi tầng lớp trong dân tộc thành một lực lượng thống nhất, là tinh thần yêu thương dân.
