La duchesse d'Alba, opéra-comique in three acts on a libretto by Jules Henri Vernoy, marquis de Saint-Georges, was commissioned by Adolphe Adam for the Théâtre-Lyrique and composed in 1847-48. After the theater closed owing to the 1848 Revolution, Offenbach tried in vain to have it performed in Cologne in a German version.
