Sãi Vãi was written in 1750 by Nguyễn Cư Trinh (1716-1767) when he was appointed to be the Governor of Quảng Ngãi. The poem was born in a circumstance when there was a group of minorities who lived in the mountainous areas of Quảng Ngãi, due to the harsh ruling of Nguyễn Lord, rebelled against the government. Nguyễn Cư Trinh was assigned to lead the royal army to suppress the rebellion. However, some soldiers, who were tired of fighting abandoned their duties to become monks. This poem, through a conversation between two monks criticizes those who are coward, selfish, greedy, unfaithful, lack of loyalty and encourage those who are responsible of their assigned works. The poem includes 640 sentences, pair up in different lengths and rhyme to each other. The combinations between casual and formal, witty and eloquent styles make the poem vivacious, cheerful and still full of moralities. Nguyễn Cư Trinh was born in An Hòa village, Hương Trà district, Thuận Hóa province (now is An Hòa ward, Huế city, Thừa Thiên Huế province). His family had a long tradition of literature study and his ancestors were loyal officials. In 1740, he passed the imperial examination and since then was appointed to different positions to oversee some areas in central part of Vietnam. He even helped the Nguyễn Lord to expand the territory to the South. Not only was he an army leader but also he was a poet, a writer. All his literary works is the reflection of his military career. Some poems are exciting, passionate, some are sad, depressive. It is the contradiction inside Nguyễn Cư Trinh as being a loyal soldier who vows to serve the Emperor but a mindful, lonely man who sees the hardship the ordinary people experience everyday.
