Views taken from an airplane over Palm Springs, a desert resort town, and its environs, March 2013. It is located approximately 107 miles (172 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. The population was 44,552 at the 2010 census. The city spans over 94 square miles, making it the largest city in the county by size (Riverside County). Tourism is a major factor in the city's economy with 1.6 million visitors in 2011. Located in the Coachella Valley of the Sonoran Desert region, Palm Springs is sheltered by the San Bernardino Mountains to the north, the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south, by the San Jacinto Mountains to the west and by the Little San Bernardino Mountains to the east.
