The twenty-one drawings, which have never been exhibited, originally accompanied Matisse's fundamental letter, written in June 1943; they were later exchanged for photographs, still preserved in the Rouveyre Collection. The original envelope bears a note written in red by Rouveyre: 'Careful with this: irreplaceable, obviously goes with the most important letters.' Dated bottom right: 25/8/41 and numbered by the artist.
