Notes:
The capelike form on the man third from the left is slashed from the hem almost to the shoulder line. The right-hand figure is in the cote-hardie.
Abstract:
The garde-corps is the first overcoat. A garment of mass and dignity, it is long and full throughout the body. Full, capelike sleeves are attached to the shoulders with gauging or cartridge pleating. At the elbow position there is a slash for the arms. A separate cowl collar or hood is put on over the head. When the gardecorps is lined in fur (usually ermine), it is referred to as the pelisson. Older mantles and capes remain, often lined in contrasting colors. Cape fastenings vary from side to center front.
