Sack catalogue description: Set of four Chippendale chairs with stop-fluted legs consisting of two armchairs and two side chairs, gadrooned carving, the interlaced splats have a loop formation and a floral-carved motif centers the crest; the sculptured arms end in scrolled terminals, fine mellow brown patina, attributed to John Townsend. Ex-collection King family, Newport, Rhode Island. To our knowledge, this set contains the only pair of Newport Chippendale armchairs known to exist; the gadrooned carving appears on the Toland kneehole desk, illustrated in Nutting, Furniture Treasury, pl. 627, and the Daniel Goddard kneehole desk, illustrated in Moses and Sack, Master Craftsmen of Newport, p. 265.
