Mirror glass; mahogany; gilding
Sack catalogue description: Hepplewhite scrolled mirror, burled mahogany veneered front with beaded mirror border, crest with gilded raised urn in bellflower oval over incised gilded floral panel; incised gilded drapery panel in base, signed "Luther Woodbury of Beverly" on the backboard. Not much is known about Luther Woodbury of Beverly, Massachusetts; the contemporary script written below Woodbury's mark on the backboard of this mirror, reading "30 leaves 12 horns," possibly denotes the quantity of gilt employed. It is our theory that a carver engaged by Woodbury to highlight this mirror made this inscription. ----- Bibliography: Book: American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, 10 vols.
