Sack catalogue description: This magnificent set consisting of a Chippendale mahogany highboy and lowboy, along with a pair of chairs, is recorded in the account book of Richard Edwards as follows: "24, 3 mo. 1775 / Thomas Tufft Acc't for my furniture / To a pair of Mahogany Drawers / Pitch head fret, 22 / and Dentels and a Table to Suit, 8 / To six Mahogany Chairs open / backs and Elbow Chair to Suit, 13.8." Edwards was a Burlington County, Pennsylvania merchant who bought a number of recorded items from Thomas Tufft in the eighteenth century; the Richard Edwards family furniture was made and documented by Thomas Tufft in Philadelphia ca. 1775–1776. This highboy is one of two or three Philadelphia examples with a pitch pediment, making the account depiction more significant; the knee carving on these pieces relates to similar carving on the labeled Thomas Tufft lowboy in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, illustrated in The Magazine Antiques (October 1927): pp. 292–293. This set is also related to a Chippendale mahogany pier table made by Tufft for Richard Edwards in 1775, illustrated in American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, vol. 10, p. 2542, pl. P6266.
