Sack catalogue description: Hepplewhite mahogany tall clock, the case is of typical Willard design, its magnificent beauty is aided by its compact small size and mellow original patina; the enameled dial is inscribed "Simon Willard" and the waist door contains the label of Simon Willard engraved by Joseph N. Russell, the clock is original in every respect except for a small section of the fretwork, beautiful golden brown patina. Accompanying this clock is a letter from Simon Willard to Mr. Ahijah Hawkes of Lynn, Massachusetts; that letter is reproduced with the clock. In an accompanying letter to Mr. Ahijah Hawkes, Willard called this "one of my best clocks." The inside of the waist door bears Simon Willard's rare early label printed by Joseph N. Russell of Quaker Street, Boston; Russell made labels for Simon Willard between 1792 and 1796. ----- Bibliography: Book: American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, 10 vols.
